How Children Pricing Works in This WordPress Hotel Booking Plugin
Most hotel booking plugins make children pricing unnecessarily complicated — tiered age brackets, multiplier tables, percentage rates. Modern Hotel Booking Pro takes a more practical approach: three fields per room type, set once, and the booking form calculates everything automatically from there.
Here’s the logic: you tell the plugin how many children a room can hold, up to what age they stay free, and what the flat nightly rate is for children above that age. That’s it. No spreadsheet of multipliers, no age tier configuration panels, no guest-facing complexity. A family sees a clean breakdown at checkout — base rate plus any child charges — calculated in seconds.
All three settings live in the same place you configure everything else about a room: the Pricing & Capacity section of the Room Type editor. Each room type can have its own values — a family bungalow might accept four children with a generous free age threshold, while a studio room accepts none.
The Three Children Pricing Fields — What Each One Does
All three are in Hotel Booking → Room Types → [your room type] → Pricing & Capacity. They sit alongside the Nightly Base Rate and Adult Capacity fields you’ll already be familiar with from setting up the room type.
Child Capacity
The maximum number of children this room type can accommodate. Guests cannot select more children than this value at checkout.
- Set to 2 to allow up to 2 children
- Set to 0 for adults-only rooms
- Works alongside Adult Capacity and the overall room occupancy limit
Child Free Age
Children at or below this age stay free — no Extra Child Rate is added for them. Children above this age are charged the Extra Child Rate per night.
- Set to 3 — children aged 3 and under stay free
- Set to 0 — all children are charged regardless of age
- Set to 17 — all children stay free
Extra Child Rate
The flat nightly rate charged per child above the free age threshold. Applied per child per night and added to the booking total automatically at checkout.
- Set in your property’s currency
- Applied per child per night — not per booking
- Set to 0 if all children stay free
Step-by-Step Children Pricing Setup (Pro)
Requires an active Modern Hotel Booking Pro licence
Do this for each room type individually. A property with three room types needs to complete these steps three times — but each takes under 2 minutes once you know the values you want.
Open the Room Type you want to configure
Go to Hotel Booking → Room Types in your WP admin. Click on the room type you want to configure. Scroll to the Pricing & Capacity section — you’ll see your existing Nightly Base Rate and Adult Capacity fields, with the children fields below them. These fields are visible only with an active Pro licence.
Set the Child Capacity
Enter the maximum number of children this room type accommodates. Think realistically — a double room might fit 1 or 2 children on extra beds or a pull-out. A family apartment might take 3 or 4. Set this to 0 if the room type is adults-only. The booking form will not allow guests to select more children than this value.
Set the Child Free Age
Enter the age at or below which children stay free. For example, enter 3 and any child aged 3 or under adds nothing to the booking total. Children aged 4 and above will be charged the Extra Child Rate. If all children should be charged regardless of age, enter 0. If all children stay free regardless of age, skip the Extra Child Rate or set it to 0.
Set the Extra Child Rate
Enter the nightly rate charged per child above the free age threshold. This is a flat amount in your configured currency — added to the booking total per child per night. For example, enter 50 and the booking form adds 50 per child per night for any child above your Child Free Age. Leave it at 0 if all children stay free regardless of age.
Save and test at checkout
Click Update to save the room type. Open your booking form in an incognito tab, select the room, add children at various ages, and check the total shown at checkout matches what you configured. If your property uses caching, clear it before testing. Repeat steps 1–5 for every room type at your property.
Real Pricing Examples — How the Booking Total Calculates
The Extra Child Rate is charged per child per night — not per booking. Here are some worked examples showing how the total calculates at checkout depending on your configuration.
| Configuration | Booking scenario | Total child charge |
|---|---|---|
| Child Free Age: 3 Extra Child Rate: 50 |
1 child aged 2 — 3 nights | 0 — child is at or below free age |
| Child Free Age: 3 Extra Child Rate: 50 |
1 child aged 5 — 3 nights | 150 (50 × 1 child × 3 nights) |
| Child Free Age: 3 Extra Child Rate: 50 |
2 children aged 7 and 9 — 2 nights | 200 (50 × 2 children × 2 nights) |
| Child Free Age: 3 Extra Child Rate: 50 |
1 child aged 2 + 1 child aged 8 — 2 nights | 100 (50 × 1 chargeable child × 2 nights — the 2-year-old is free) |
| Child Free Age: 0 Extra Child Rate: 0 |
Any children, any age | 0 — all children stay free |
💡 How guests see it: At checkout, the booking form shows the base room rate and any child charges as a clear line-item breakdown. Guests see exactly what they’re paying before they commit — which matters for family bookings where the total can differ meaningfully from the headline room rate.
Configuring Adults-Only Room Types
If a room type doesn’t accept children, the configuration is simple. In the Pricing & Capacity section for that room type:
- Set Child Capacity to 0 — guests cannot select children for this room at checkout
- Leave Child Free Age and Extra Child Rate at 0 — they won’t apply when Child Capacity is 0
- Add a clear note in the room type description that this room is adults-only — guests should see this before reaching the booking form, not after
You can mix room types freely within the same property — a family bungalow with Child Capacity 3 and a studio double with Child Capacity 0 work independently. Each room type enforces its own capacity settings at checkout.
Free Version: What’s Available Without Pro
The free version of Modern Hotel Booking collects a total guest headcount at checkout — one number covering all guests, adults and children together. There is no separate children field, no Child Capacity limit, no Child Free Age, and no Extra Child Rate without Pro. The booking form simply asks how many guests in total.
For many small properties this is fine. If you charge a flat rate per room regardless of who’s in it — two adults, two adults and two kids, same price — the free version handles it cleanly. You set the overall room capacity and the booking form enforces it. No child-specific complexity, no extra configuration.

Troubleshooting Children Pricing Hotel Booking Configuration Issues
Child Capacity, Child Free Age, and Extra Child Rate fields are not visible in the Room Type editor
These are Pro-only fields. Go to Hotel Booking → Licence and confirm your Pro licence key is entered and shows as active. If the licence is active but the fields are still not appearing, deactivate and reactivate the plugin to reload the Pro field set, then open the Room Type editor again.
No children field appearing on the booking form at checkout
Confirm the Child Capacity field in the Room Type is set to a number greater than 0. If Child Capacity is 0, the booking form treats the room as adults-only and no children selector appears. Set it to 1 or higher to allow children for that room type, then clear your caching plugin and test in an incognito window.
The Extra Child Rate is being charged for children who should be free
Reopen the Room Type and check the Child Free Age value. Make sure it’s set to the correct upper age limit for free stays — if it’s set to 0, all children are charged. Also confirm the room type was saved after the change. Clear all caches before testing again.
The child charge total at checkout looks wrong
Remember the Extra Child Rate is per child per night — not per booking. A 3-night stay with 2 chargeable children at an Extra Child Rate of 50 totals 300 (50 × 2 × 3). If the number looks higher than expected, check the number of nights and chargeable children in your test booking. Also confirm the room type was saved after your last edit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is children pricing available in the free version of Modern Hotel Booking?
No. The Child Capacity, Child Free Age, and Extra Child Rate fields are all Pro features. The free version collects a total guest headcount only — no child-specific fields or rates appear at checkout without an active Pro licence.
How does the Child Free Age work in the WordPress hotel booking plugin?
Children at or below the Child Free Age you set stay free — no Extra Child Rate is added for them. Set it to 3 and children aged 3 and under stay free. Children aged 4 and above are charged the Extra Child Rate per night. Set it to 0 if all children should be charged regardless of age.
Is the Extra Child Rate charged per night or per booking?
Per child per night. A 4-night booking with 2 chargeable children at an Extra Child Rate of 50 adds 400 to the total (50 × 2 children × 4 nights). The booking form calculates and displays this breakdown automatically at checkout.
Can I set different children pricing for different room types?
Yes. Child Capacity, Child Free Age, and Extra Child Rate are all configured at the Room Type level. A family bungalow can have a Child Capacity of 4 with a Child Free Age of 3 and an Extra Child Rate of 40. A studio double can have a Child Capacity of 0. Each room type is independent.
What happens if I set Child Capacity to 0?
Setting Child Capacity to 0 makes that room type adults-only — no children selector appears at checkout for it. Use this for rooms that physically cannot accommodate children or for premium adult-only room categories.
Can I make all children stay free regardless of age?
Yes. Either set the Child Free Age to a high number covering all ages (such as 17) or set the Extra Child Rate to 0. Either way no additional charge is added for children in the booking total. Set Child Capacity to a number above 0 so the children field appears at checkout.
Does the family hotel booking plugin child rate apply across all payment methods?
Yes. The Extra Child Rate is included in the booking total regardless of how the guest pays — Stripe, PayPal, bank transfer, Revolut, or pay-on-arrival. The pricing calculation happens at checkout before the guest selects a payment method.
